Michael Schmidt is the winner of the fifth annual Prix Pictet photography prize, for his series Lebensmittel (Food stuff), 2006-2010. The prize, which includes 100,000 Swiss francs, is sponsored by the Pictet Group, Swiss wealth and asset managers, and is awarded to a photographer whose work explores the world’s most pressing social and environmental challenges.

The theme of this year’s prize is Consumption, and in Lebensmittel, Schmidt explored the global food industry, traveling the world to photograph supermarkets, factory farms, industrial slaughterhouses, as well as individual pieces of food.

In announcing the prize winner, Kofi Annan, honorary president of Prix Pictet, observed, “The issue of unsustainable consumption, and in particular food and nutrition security, is not simply at the forefront of the global political stage, it is now firmly on the personal agenda of each and every one of us.”
