To expand upon Modern Women | Modern Vision: Photography from the Bank of America Collection, the Crocker presents Frame by Frame, a film series that highlights the impact of film on the practice of female photographers. Former photojournalist for the Sacramento Bee and documentarian Autumn Payne; photographer, filmmaker, and California State University, Sacramento professor Kathryn Kasic; and artist Muzi Li Rowe will each present a film that has shaped their artistic vision in a meaningful way.

Third Sundays October, November, December

The Biggest Little Farm (2018) – John Chester
Thursday, October 20, 2022 6:30 PM

Introduced by local documentary filmmaker Autumn Payne, The Biggest Little Farm follows John and Molly Chester on their quest to develop a 200-acre sustainable farm, Apricot Lane, forty miles outside of Los Angeles. Arresting cinematography, dogged perseverance, and a commitment to a collective dream punctuate this moving documentary of the Chester’s eight-year journey as they trade LA jobs and city life for the countryside – all with the hope of farming in harmony with nature.

Wings of Desire (1987) – Wim Wenders
Thursday, November 17, 2022 6:30 PM

Introduced by local director, cinematographer, and California State University, Sacramento film professor Kathy Kasic, Wings of Desire is an arthouse favorite about angel Damiel falling in love with Marion, a beautiful trapeze artist. Shot at a moment in history when the Berlin Wall seemed destined to divide the city in perpetuity, Wender’s film is an elegiac “city symphony.” Wings of Desire was co-conceived with Peter Handke and filmed in both color and black and white by Henri Alekan, and it cemented Wender’s reputation for creating thought provoking film art.

Tim’s Vermeer (2013) – Teller
Thursday, December 15, 2022 6:30 PM

Introduced by local photographer and artist Muzi Li Rowe, Tim’s Vermeer tells the story of Texas-based inventor Tim Jenison and his epic pursuit of an answer to how Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer was able to achieve his characteristic photographic realism 150 years before the invention of the camera. In this extraordinary tale of inquisitiveness, Jenison’s research and experiments take to him to Holland, the royalty of Buckingham Palace, and even the North coast of Yorkshire — and the home of renowned British painter David Hockney — as he attempts to satisfy his all-consuming curiosity.

Head On Photo Festival 2022

Festival

November 4 - December 4

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

World-renowned Head On Photo Festival, a highlight of Australia’s arts calendar, celebrates its 13th year with an electric range of photography from around the world in unique outdoor exhibitions. The Festival, free and open to the public, comprises over 500 photographers across 107 exhibitions, including the Festival’s major outdoor venues – the stunning Bondi Beach, the recently renovated Bondi Pavilion and Paddington Reservoir Gardens.

The Festival
Annually Head On Photo Festival presents groundbreaking photographic stories that tell stories through photography across all genres, from fine art to photojournalism. Judges select all exhibiting photographers through Head On’s unique judging process, in which they judge works anonymously, ensuring a diverse range of stories and equal opportunity.

This year, exhibitions and conversations explore important global issues – the impacts of COVID-19, global conflict, refugees, feminism, motherhood, pop culture, the environment, youth homelessness and gentrification.

The program features unique insights into war, displacement and refugees from two rising stars. Sahat Zia Hero documents life from within Bangladesh’s largest refugee camp where he lives and 21-year-old Syrian photojournalist Mouneb Taim, who has been capturing the reality of war-torn Syria since he was a child.

CANADA NOW Artists in Conversation: JJ Levine and Kali Spitzer

Artist Discussion

November 30

33 Gould Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

This is the final instalment in The Image Centre’s four-part series of artist talks featuring conversations between the multi-disciplinary image makers presented in CANADA NOW: New Photography Acquisitions, on view through December 3, 2022.

In dialogue with exhibition curator Denise Birkhofer, JJ Levine and Kali Spitzer discuss parallel aspects of their works. The artists discuss their shared mission of community representation, a central theme in both Levine’s Queer Portraits series and Spitzer’s An Exploration of Resilience series. While Levine sets out to contribute to visual representations of alternative, queer, and trans family structures with their staged portraits of friends, lovers and siblings in the LGBTQ+ community; Spitzer endeavours to tell the story of her own community, capturing images of primarily BIPOC, queer, femme, trans and gender non-confirming kin to challenge pre-conceived notions of race, gender and sexuality.
