Join curator Lynette Roth and curatorial assistant Bridget Hinz for an in-depth tour of our special exhibition White Shadows: Anneliese Hager and the Camera-less Photograph, on view through July 31, 2022.

Anneliese Hager (1904–1997) made significant contributions to the medium of camera-less photography and to the wider surrealist movement in Europe. The camera-less photograph, or photogram, is an image made by placing objects directly on (or in close proximity to) a light-sensitive surface and then exposing the assembled material to light. The first exhibition to focus on the role of women makers in the history of the photogram, White Shadows showcases 29 recently acquired photograms made by the artist between the late 1940s and 1960s, as well as a variety of light-based works by Hager’s predecessors and contemporaries.

Led by:
Lynette Roth, Daimler Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum, Division of Modern and Contemporary Art

Bridget Hinz, Curatorial Assistant for Special Exhibitions and Publications, Division of Modern and Contemporary Art

Mordançage Workshop with Elizabeth Opalenik

Seminar

July 15 - July 17

207 N Gilbert Rd, Ste 201 Gilbert, AZ

After more than 30 years of committing to the mordançage process, Elizabeth has many possibilities, pitfalls and discoveries to share. Working collectively with a group of photographic peers, students can combine information on papers available today to further enhance their creativity. Experimenting is highly encouraged. A working knowledge of the darkroom is essential.

As artists, we much each find our way and hope to leave something of value behind. The “draped spidery veils” in the images can be accomplished by using one’s breath or drops of water to preserve and alter the delicate floating silver skin. As such, each piece is unique and truly made by hand even is created with the same negative.

See our website for pricing details and for enrollment!
