Obscura Gallery is thrilled to present our 2021 Summer exhibition, “Where Shadows Cease: Resonance of America’s Dream”, with gallery artist Susan Burnstine. The prints in the exhibition include recent additions to Burnstine’s ongoing color series captured on self-made cameras, which explore the connections between the personal and collective unconscious during an unparalleled period in America. By infusing common dream themes and symbols found within the familiar, Susan Burnstine has observed commonly shared memories and universal representations found at places connected to the ethos of the “American Dream,” which reflect the collective hopes, fears and aspirations found in the social topography of America. Through revisiting iconic locations and landscapes across the United States she has explored corridors of this land through visual metaphor and symbolism as a means to uncover the hidden uniformities that reside within the nations’ collective unconscious in the present era. The exhibition coincides with Susan’s workshop at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and the artist reception will take place on Thursday, July 29 at Obscura Gallery from 5-7pm.

Reception with Douglas Miles for exhibition, Future Intercept

Exhibition Tour

August 20

1405 Paseo De Peralta, Santa Fe, NM,

In coordination with the busiest month in Santa Fe, August 2021, known worldwide for the celebration of Native American art markets all throughout our city, Obscura Gallery presents the photographic exhibition, Future Intercept, with gallery artist Douglas Miles. San Carlos Apache-Akimel O’odham artist Douglas Miles’s artistic work is rooted in Apache history and deeply engaged with the world of contemporary pop culture. His latest photographic composite series, Future Intercept, transverses through time, rejecting western exotic, white gaze, stereotypes of Native people in America as a way to re-imagine the future of Indigenous and Native communities. Through the exploration of Futurism, we are presented with a narrative that looks back on a distraught past to reconstruct and foretell an impending future. By bending and folding the past and future as it collides, Miles photographic work speaks on lineage and legacy within a community whose roots are deeply embedded across the Americas.

The exhibition reception with the artist takes place on Friday, August 20, 5-7pm at Obscura Gallery. The exhibition is on view August 6 – August 21, 2021.

Vintage Photo Festival

Festival

September 17 - October 2

Bydgoszcz, Poland

The International Festival of Analog Photography Lovers – called the Vintage Photo Festival – is a cyclical project born in 2015 out of the passion for traditional photography and a deep conviction that the old photographic techniques are experiencing a renaissance today.

Despite the great revolution and evolution in the field of digital photography, we can witness the return or rebirth of traditional photography. Film cameras are back in favor, which is confirmed by the observations of photographic film producers such as Kodak, which in recent years has restored the production of several types of negative films previously with drawn from the market.

More and more young artists make the so-called analog photography their medium of expression.

The idea of the festival is based on rich photographic traditions of the city of Bydgoszcz, Poland, where until the 1990s the second largest factory in the country producing photographic materials FOTON operated. On the basis of this cultural heritage, we have created a precursor festival dedicated to traditional photography, whose strong point is a modern educational platform. The festival’s goal is to promote traditional photography and present current trends in this field.

The Vintage Photo Festival is the only such opportunity in Poland, and the first in the world to give access to so many exhibitions, author meetings and photographic workshops devoted to old photographic techniques in one place and time. So far the festival’s guests have been Eva Rubinstein, Tadeusz Rolke, Laurent Benaïm, Amy Friend, Rie Yamada, Eric Schütt, Teresa Gierzyńska, Wojciech Prażmowski, Marja Pirilä. In addition, we presented the work of Masha Iwaszincowa, Tomasz Gudzowaty, Bogdan Konopka, Tonje Bøe Birkeland and many others.
