Prison Nation is a traveling photographic exhibition coordinated by Aperture that brings together the work of photographers who focus on prisons and prisoner life. From the 1960’s through contemporary prison culture in the United States these photographs address the question, “how can images tell the story of mass incarceration when the imprisoned don’t have control over their own representation?”

Birney Imes: ‘Found these pictures’

For more than 20 years in the 1970s and 80s, Birney Imes roamed the countryside of his native Mississippi photographing the people and places he encountered along the way. Working in both black and white and color, Imes’ photographs take viewers inside juke joints and dilapidated restaurants scattered across that landscape. There he introduces the viewer, as one writer put it, “to the strange and marvelous qualities of these local gathering spots.”

Imes’ photographs have been collected in three books: Juke Joint, Whispering Pines, and Partial to Home, and have been exhibited in solo shows in the United States and Europe. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and numerous public and private collections in the U.S. and abroad.

Contemplating the View: American Landscape Photographs

This exhibition highlights one of the Addison collection’s great strengths–images of the American landscape, both natural and manmade. Whether historical or contemporary, fact or fiction, abstract or representative, celebratory or critical, private exploration or social document, all of the photographs assembled in this exhibition comment to one degree or another on the overlapping and often contesting powers of culture and nature. The complex dialogue these images foster prods us to consider the contrast between our myths and realities. Featuring works by photographers such as Carleton Watkins, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Robert Adams, Lois Conner, Marcia Resnick, and Katherine Wolkoff, these photographs present more than mere description. As vehicles for artistic, personal, and cultural expression they challenge us to examine and reflect upon who we are.​

With the Help of Friends celebrates fifteen dynamic photographs ranging from the 1930s to the present day that were selected and purchased over the recent years by the Amon Carter with the assistance of its photography collection supporters. Whether it’s the youthful theatrics of Joaquin Trujillo’s Jacky or the raw industrial motion of Margaret Bourke-White’s Four Thousand Fahrenheit, Otis Steel Company, these photographs tell vivid stories about life and how we think about our world. At the same time, the exhibition proclaims the vibrancy of the museum’s ongoing relationship with its members, and the key help that members provide in keeping the collection one of the world’s leading repositories of photography.

Carol Henry: Spellbinding Light — The Art of Analog Photography

This exhibition presents an experience of Carol Henry’s unique and beautiful images, painstakingly handcrafted in the darkroom in a style and using processes that make them all editions of one. The main body of work that kept Carol Henry in the darkroom for decades was direct printing on positive print, color paper Cibachrome, later called Ilfochrome. Since the material was sensitive to all ranges of light and had a deep emulsion with reflective backing, it beckoned her to experiment with translucent objects directly transmitted onto the surface.

With CIbachrome no longer available after 2012, Carol now uses the cyanotype process to continue the exploration of botanicals and found objects of all shapes and sizes exposed under the rays of the sun or moon. Three life size cyanotype banners in the exhibition refer to the women’s movement of 2018 and were exhibited at the Monterey Museum of Art in conjunction with Year of the Woman where she had a solo cyanotype exhibition in July 2018 titled Indigo.
