November – December 2017 About The Cover

By Jean Dykstra, November 3, 2017

Natural and political disasters – the devastating earthquake that struck Mexico City in September on the one hand; DACA and that wall on the other – have put Mexico in the news. But on November 4, the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego opens Point/Counterpoint: Contemporary Mexican Photography, highlighting the country’s immense creative output. Many of the 19 artists included engage with economic, political, and social issues; others with formal concerns. Alejandra Laviada, whose Purple, Orange, Yellow Circles, 2014 (courtesy the artist, Julie Saul Gallery and the Museum of Photographic Arts), is on our cover, bridges photography, sculpture, and painting, following László Moholy-Nagy’s belief that the camera should be liberated from its documentary role to embrace abstraction.
