As part of photojournalist Shannon Jensen’s ongoing coverage of the crisis is Sudan, she decided, at a certain point in 2012, to photograph people’s shoes. She was at the Blue Nile refugee camp in South Sudan during a period during a drastic water shortage. She arrived at the camp just as 30,000 new refugees were arriving, many having walked for three to four weeks to get there. Jensen asked the refugees if she could photograph their shoes, most of which were near tatters after their long journey.
The photographs are included in the exhibition Moving Walls 21, on view at the Open Society Foundation through October 3. Amy Yenkin, director of the Open Society Documentary Project, conducted this video interview with Jensen about her project.
