Matt Black is the winner of the 2015 W. Eugene Smith Grant, which comes with a $30,000 award. Black won the award for his ongoing exploration of poverty, immigration, and farming in California’s Central Valley. He has recently expanded the scope of that project in The Geography of Poverty, dedicated to raising awareness about the extent of poverty across the U.S. Black’s work has been distributed on Instagram and MSNBC.com, among other places, and Time magazine named him Instagram photographer of the year in 2014. Elisabeth Biondi wrote about Black’s work in the January-February 2015 issue of Photograph.
