Nigerian photographer J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere, known for his photographs of intricate and sculptural hairstyles of Nigerian women, has died. He was 83 years old. His series, called simply Hairstyles, includes more than one thousand black-and-white photographs, often taken from the back, of meticulously braided and twisted hairstyles. A studio photographer for many years, he began his series on hairstyles in 1968, but it was not until 1995 that he had his first solo exhibition in Nigeria and his work was shown outside of the country, in Switzerland. He had a solo exhibition in 2000 at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, and his work has been shown at L. Parker Stephenson Gallery, Gallery Fifty One, the Hagedorn Foundation, the Norton Museum of Art, and the 2013 Venice Biennale.
