Photographer and influential teacher Hilla Becher died on October 10.

She and her husband, Bernd Becher, who died in 2007, were a force in the photography world, known for their typologies of factories, water towers, houses, and other structures taken from the same straightforward vantage point. The duo influenced a younger generation of photographers including Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, and Andreas Gursky and others who studied at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf art academy.

The Bechers received the Hasselblad Award in 2004, when they were named “among the most influential artists of our time.”
