Congratulations to Carrie Mae Weems, the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship – otherwise known as the genius awards. In her photographs and videos over the last three decades, Weems has explored race, gender, class and family relationships. Her traveling retrospective, Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video, opens at the Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University on October 15, and travels to the Guggenheim in January. From her Kitchen Table series to From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried to Slow Fade to Black, Weems’s photographs and videos are sharp-edged and moving projects that straddle art and politics.
