Brandon Thibodeaux is the winner of the 2014 Michael P. Smith Fund’s Grant for Documentary Photography from the New Orleans Photo Alliance. The MPS Fund awards $5,000 annually to a Gulf Coast photographer working on a long-term documentary project.
Thibodeaux won for his project When Morning Comes, about rural African-American communities in northern Mississippi. Aperture editor Michael Famighetti, the juror for the 2014 fund, observed that Thibodeaux’s work “relies on a strong sense of atmosphere, suggestion, and sometimes elliptical narrative. There is a quietness to the work from which it derives its strength.”
Thibodeaux was raised in Beaumont, Texas, and began his career as a photographer at a small daily Texas newspaper. Currently based in Dallas, he photographs for The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, among other publications.
