The Museum of Modern Art has selected Quentin Bajac as the next Chief Curator of Photography, succeeding Peter Galassi who retired in 2011. Bajac, who has been the Chief Curator of Photography at the Centre Pompidou, Musée Nationale d’art moderne in Paris since 2007, will assume his new position in January. His scholarly research, development of a wide range of exhibitions, and authorship of numerous publications have addressed many important aspects of the history of the medium, ranging from a fresh look at 19th- century masters to work by contemporary photographers… The International Center of Photography has chosen Mark Robbins to be the next Executive Director, replacing Willis E. ”Buzz” Hartshorn, who is stepping down after 18 years at the helm. Over the course of a 25-year career, Robbins has held leadership roles at major arts institutions while maintaining his own multidisciplinary practice, which bridges the fields of art, architecture, and critical theory… Anthony Bannon has retired after 16 years as director of Rochester’sGeorge Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film. Bannon’s reign has been eventful, including many of the most well-attended exhibitions in the museum’s 65-year history, the creation of three post-graduate preservation schools, forging new alliances with museums and universities, and developing a social-media campaign to share Eastman House’s digitized collections with the world… Lisa Hostetler, photography curator at the Milwaukee Art Museum since 2005, is leaving in July to take a post as curator of photographs at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. In her seven years at the museum, she has curated many noted exhibitions, such as Street Seen; Photographs from the Ends of the Earth; In Living Color: Photographs by Saul Leiter; and Taryn Simon: Photographs and Texts… The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has received one of the largest and most significant gifts in its history—the Lane Collection. Included in the gift is Charles Sheeler’s entire photographic estate of nearly 2,500 works; an equal number of images by Edward Weston; and 500 photographs by Ansel Adams… TheNorton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach has announced a new international award for emerging photographers. The Rudin Prize, named for the late New York City real estate developer Lewis Rudin, includes a $20,000 cash award and a solo exhibition at the Norton.

 

At The Fairs 

 

The inaugural edition of VIP Photo, which leverages Internet technology to create a live, online marketplace for viewing and purchasing photographs, will occur from July 12-August 12 at vipartfair.com. There is also a VIP discussion series which will cover topics ranging from the technical aspects of photography to conservation practices… Paris Photo will launch its first American fair in Los Angeles next April. It will bring together 80 international galleries at the heart of the iconic site of Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood.

Iris Gallery of Fine Art Photography, with branches in Great Barrington and Boston, has opened a new space at 520 East Hyman Avenue in Aspen. The inaugural exhibition,Introduction to Aspen, opens July 1… Meanwhile, down the street at 400 East Hyman Avenue, the Joel Soroka Gallery is celebrating the beginning of its 20th anniversary with a show of the work of Cig Harvey… Santa Barbara’s Wall Space Gallery has moved to 116 East Yanonali Street in the dynamic Funk Zone, a mixed-use neighborhood by the waterfront. The opening show is Barbara Parmet’s The Measure of All Things.
