LightField Arts mounts an annual LightField Festival in Hudson, NY, that showcases the work of innovative and distinguished photographers and multimedia artists through exhibitions, events, and educational outreach.

The LightField Festival is a venue for the vibrant and very active photography and film community in the northeast U.S. It is designed to create ongoing context for its exhibited art, and to stimulate lively dialogue with the public.

Festival

FotoMéxico opens tomorrow October 23rd and runs through the end of the year. It presents around 140 exhibitions in museums and galleries all over Mexico. 

Some of the highlights from the festival are the exhibitions Carnival Strippers by Susan Meiselas, On Abortion by Laia Abril, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency by Nan Goldin, Sol negro by twelve Latin American female artists, Welcome to Lipstick by Maya Goded, Piezas interferidas by María Eugenia Chellet and Anomia by Ana Barreto.

“So much of what we are drawn to comes from the stew of our growing up, and in the case of Sarah Hadley, there is a direct line from her childhood to her project and now book, Lost Venice. As she states in her bio, “When I was just four years old, my father became the Director of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and my family moved into the apartment on the 4th floor which Mrs. Gardner had built for herself. I spent the next 19 years living in a Venetian palazzo surrounded by Gardner’s eclectic collection of classic and renaissance artwork and furnishings.” Her father was also entranced by all things Venice and the family spent vacations in this remarkable city. He died when Sarah was 25 and her project, Lost Venice, speaks to memory, loss, dark corners, and a city itself that is fragile in its existence.”

Damiani Editore has published the book and Sarah will be signing Lost Venice, as well as a Special Edition of 50 copies in a slipcase which come with your choice of one of five signed and editioned archival prints. Each print is part of an edition of 11 and she will be selling edition numbers 1-10 of all 5 prints. She is also offering a private tour and lunch at the Gardner Museum for just 8 people (who will meet in Boston at an arranged day and time – probably summer/fall of 2020).

Symposium

Organized in conjunction with the exhibition The Qualities of LIGHT: The Story of a Pioneering New York City Photography Gallery, this three-day, multi-faceted symposium uses the immense influence of LIGHT, a contemporary fine-art photography gallery that operated in the 1970s and 1980s, as a starting point for a larger discussion about photography. The discussion will explore the trajectory of the photographic medium, photography’s communities and institutions, and the photography/art market in the United States. LIGHT was the first gallery exclusively dedicated to the promotion, exhibition, and sale of contemporary photographers’ work, and supported a market for contemporary photography by treating the medium as a serious art form. The symposium, Legacies of LIGHT, combines invited presentations with panel discussions in which the story of how LIGHT was realized, the impact that it made on photography, and what it means in today’s field will be the subject of lively conversation.

The weekend opens on Friday (January 17) with an afternoon of behind-the-scenes tours, a keynote that will trace the role occupied by LIGHT since the 1970s, and a cocktail reception. Saturday (January 18) features a full-day program that addresses the context of LIGHT and its relationship to photography’s current moment. The day concludes with a film screening of a new short documentary, by Lisa Immordino Vreeland, that explores the founding and philosophy of LIGHT, followed by an exhibition opening at Etherton Gallery. Sunday (January 19) consists of a morning of moderated panel discussions that bring together LIGHT’s communities to reflect on the weekend’s proceedings. The weekend concludes with a celebration of LIGHT founding director Harold Jones and a brunch co-presented by The University of Arizona School of Art.

The 28th edition of photo l.a. will take place January 30 – February 2, 2020 and will feature photography from more than 60 local and international galleries and dealers. photo l.a. is the longest-running international photography fair on the West Coast and has hosted over 700 galleries, private dealers, and publishers since its inception in 1992. The annual event welcomes over 10,000 attendees from the international photography and art community, including collectors, curators, and art lovers. In addition to galleries, the historic Barker Hangar’s sweeping 35,000 square foot space will host a curated roster of collectives, leading non-profit organizations, art schools, and global booksellers.
