Artist Statement Bootcamp

So you hate writing an artist statement.  We get it – no one likes to!  Regardless, an artist statement is required for juried exhibitions, grant applications, exhibition proposals and residency applications – just about everything we want to do as fine art photographers.  Here’s a secret – if done right, both you and your work can really benefit from the work that goes into writing an effective statement.  The other secret?  It’s so much easier to tackle in a workshop where you can benefit from deadlines and feedback.

This workshop gives you both! Over the course of three classes, artist and curator Beth Lilly walks you step-by-step through a process that you can follow for future statements.  You’ll emerge with a finished statement that describes your work in a concise and informative way that gets people excited and interested in your work.   Sessions include a brainstorming session, detailed information on how to structure a statement, what a statement should contain and what it should not with lots of examples of both.

An Evening with Greg Gorman

Artist Lecture

February 20

5566 Washington Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Greg Gorman will provide us a glimpse of his upcoming Retrospective being published by teNeues, followed by a conversation with Gary Johns, Designer and Creative Director of the project.

Greg Gorman’s (https://www.gormanphotography.com/) work documents that peculiar obsession of the 20th century celebrity. Each shot, a testament to the individual character, gives a picture of human nature in its infinite range. “For me a photograph is most successful when it doesn’t answer all the questions,” says Gorman, “and it leaves something to be desired.” For over three decades, Greg Gorman has continued to master the art of photography. From personality portraits and advertising campaigns to magazine layouts and fine art work, Greg has developed and showcased a discriminating and unique style in his profession.

Artist Talk with Janet Dey: Saturday, February 22, 4pm
Public Reception: Saturday, February 22, 2 – 5pm

The gallery is pleased to present an exhibition in the Reading Room of work by Janet Dey featuring her series entitled “Magic”. The exhibition is on in conjunction with “Illusions: The Art of Magic” on display at the Art Gallery of Ontario from February 22 – May 18, 2020.

In “Magic”, Dey draws attention to well-known magicians who charmed and captivated audiences, and whose stories have been retold time and time again. Compelled by their dark and mysterious minds, Dey hand-embroiders on enlarged modern prints of vintage photographs. Every stitch and knot in Dey’s design embellishes or further hides the identity of the subjects. Often masking entire faces leaving only their eyes visible, the work takes on a new story, a vision told from Dey’s perspective and left for the viewer to discover. The final artwork is unique, designed to last another several lifetimes. A rebellion against time.

The source photographs are from the collection of David Ben, writer, stage magician, performer, and magic collector.
